We had a great time last night. The line dancing was a lot of fun and good physical activity. Today while I was doing my walking at the Brody School of Medicine, I saw several of our Chinese members. We all agreed that last night was a big success. Everyone is looking forward to next week.

For those considering joining our beginning line dancing class, Jane reviews each routine encountered at previous classes at the start of class. So don't worry about being behind. We have had 45 persons attend at least 1 of the first 2 clases.

Beth's comment, written after the first class, is typical of those shared verbally.

Through our first three classes we have had 55 different persons, including 25 Chinese, with an average attendance of 35. As the Thursday night classes have included both Chinese New Year and Valentine Day, participation has exceeded expectations. Ages range from 12 to 80 and participants include 7 couples.

Being a cross cultural, cross generational, cross gender, relationship building activity is one thing. Getting a hour of mild aerobics accomplished simultaneously is a healthy bonus. But it is the fun that will sustain the participation over time. We will follow the ECU schedule (specific dates posted soon).

Through 5 weeks we have had 58 persons and averaged 33 in weekly participation. High Thursday was 2/21/2008 with 41. This past Thursday, 2/28/2008, we experienced our teacher/leader, Jane Wang, in absentia. Interestingly our group drank more water than on previous Thursdays. Apparently our 25 minute video of Jane, which we played through twice, has more robust movement than the live classes :-)

Jane will also miss the next two Thursdays as she travels with a niece engaged in classical piano auditions. We will augment our 'Jane Wang video' with some downloaded video material.

Upon completion of week 11 of our 13-week series of classes we have experienced:

70 total individuals participating
41 highest attendance night
14 lowest attendance night
25 average attendance
38 attending 3 or more times
294 total aerobic exercise hours
3 African-Americans
25 Chinese
42 Caucasians
10 youngest age
80 oldest age
17 males
53 females
6 dance routines introduced

For those who have yet to participate, attending the last two classes until we resume in the fall will is an opportunity to compare your aerobic capacity to others. As Jane conducts a lively class, some have learned they need to exercise more between classes. Participation now will provide a reasonable goal to work toward over the summer months.

Statistics do not capture the number of smiles exchanged, new names learned, or feeling of camaraderie experienced by such a multi-generational, multi-cultural group enjoying a common activity. The 294 hours has done more than get heart rates up.

The initial 14-week line dancing class ended with 79 total participants. First-time participants attend weeks 13 and 14, which is indicative of the amount of "word of mouth" promotion by other participants.

The primary ingredients needed to conduct a class are:

Adequate space, and an

Effective leader/teacher

It appears if you supply the space and teacher, folks will come.

The second series (Fall 2008) of line dancing classes attracted 10 new participants in first two weeks. Indications are most regulars from last Spring will have joined the newcomers by the end of September, 2008.

28 folks attended our first three sessions of the Fall Series, 11 of them new. Jane Wang is introducing new music and routines. Soon we will have reached 100 people since we started in February of 2008.

Our second year of line dancing will officially start on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 7:00 pm in the TMBC Multi-Purpose Room (formerly known as the Fellowship Hall). We expect some of our Hispanic friends to join us this year. An interesting discovery from using line dancing as a means of aerobic exercise is that it transcends cultural differences. Caucasians, Chinese, Hispanics, and African-Americans have enjoyed participating.

During 2009 we will utilize the newly revamped TMBC website (http://www.tmbc.org/index.php), particularly the Message Board and Calendar, in communicating the benefits of exercise in improving health.

We had 22 persons, 5 of them first-timers, at our first 2009 Line Dancing Class.

Chinese participants were well represented with 14 folks. We also had 5 Caucasians and 3 African-Americans. A number of our regulars from 2008 will be joining us soon.

Hopefully we will break 2008's total persons participating of 100 by Spring Break!

To do that folks reading this will need to be an encourager for somebody! Everybody who Moves More will will improve some aspect of their health!

Mary Patterson, a member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, who participated with us several times during 2008 is planning on bringing a small group (up to 7) with her tomorrow night.

In addition to participating with us, she will have some True North snacks (which I think are whole nuts) to distribute.

Some may recall reading a feature article in The Daily Reflector last year about Mary successfully using diet and exercise to lose a significant amount of weight.

There is room for you to also bring a guest.
